The absence or full absorption of visible light produces the colour black. Like white and grey, it is an achromatic colour with no hue. It is frequently used to denote darkness, either symbolically or figuratively. The opposites of good and evil, the Dark Ages vs the Age of Enlightenment, and night versus day have all been described using black and white. Black has been the symbolic hue of solemnity and authority since the Middle Ages, and it is still worn by judges and magistrates today.
