The farmed white button mushroom, Agaricus bisporus, is the gold standard for the name "mushroom," so the term "mushroom" is most generally used to refer to fungus (Basidiomycota, Agaricomycetes) with a stem (stipe), a cap (pileus), and gills (lamellae, sing. lamella) on the underside of the cap. The name "mushroom" is also used to designate the fleshy fruiting bodies of various Ascomycota, which are gilled fungus with or without stems. These gills create small spores that aid in the spread of the fungus on the ground or on the occupant's surface.
More specific names are given to forms that deviate from the typical morphology, such as "bolete," "puffball," "stinkhorn," and "morel," and gilled mushrooms are frequently referred to as "agarics" due to their resemblance to Agaricus or their gilled appearance.
